WILSON
ISLAND
A private coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef.
Wilson
Island is a sweep of white sand beach that is both part of the Great Barrier
Reef and surrounded by it, its pristine waters host to unimaginable variety of
marine life including coral and fish. Wilson is also a rare turtle breeding
ground.
The island is a prime breeding ground for Green
and Loggerhead turtles and a nesting ground for muttonbirds, noddies and other
sea birds. Working with Marine Park authorities, the managers have made a strong
commitment to creating an environment that provides minimum impact by a very
limited number of guests in a fragile environment with an ecologically sound
facility.
Hosts: Matt
Forrest and Kristine Cambridge
Accommodation
/ Meals: Six permanent tents, each with a view of the ocean, are
scattered about the island. Simple but comfortable, the tents are built on a
raised timber floor with kingsize beds, feather duvets, bedside lights,
comfortable deck chairs. A separate building houses six designated toilet,
shower & dressing areas.
Other
features include the Longhouse, a central complex with dining and lounge
facilities. The Community Tent, with open sides, large comfortable day beds, a
selection of magazines and binoculars provides guests the perfect place to relax
and enjoy the stunning ocean, reef and sunset views.
Meals are simple and fresh. Breakfast is a
tropical buffet, with hot breakfasts cooked to order. Lunch is a delicious
smorgasbord which can be enjoyed in the Longhouse, or picnic style on the beach.
Each evening guests enjoy sunset drinks and canapés before returning to The
Longhouse to find the table set for a dinner party style gathering of friends,
with light music playing and the candles lit.
Activities:
Live and enjoy life as a beachcomber. Days can be filled snorkelling and
exploring the Island, in-season watching turtles and birds nesting, or simply
lazing in a hammock and enjoying the views.
Matt and Kristine have an in-depth knowledge and a genuine interest in forest
and marine ecosystems, having both trained and worked in environmental sciences.
They will share their enthusiasm for the environment with guests whilst leading
a range of nature-based activities including rainforest walks, reef discovery
walks and snorkelling safaris.
Please note that all stays on Wilson must be for three nights and are in
combination with a stay at Heron Island. Children under 16 are not catered for.
