Nestled
at the foot of the Elder Range, Arkaba Station is the home of Dean and Lizzie
Rasheed, whose family have long been part of the region’s history. The station provides some of the most spectacular panoramas in Australia, best enjoyed with a chilled glass of wine from the top of the ranges at dusk, as the sun sets across the outback plains. The craggy sandstone mountains and the dry creek beds lined with river red gums are a quintessential Australian scene, as the wildlife emerges in the cool light of dusk to drink at waterholes. Over 300 species of bird and unique mammal species abound in the Flinders Ranges but it is the region’s geology that makes it so special. The Flinders are an insight into the depth of Australia’s geological history, extending back more than a billion years, with long-disappeared mountain ranges, beaches, tidal flats, reefs and glacial moraines – the evidence remains in the rocks to this day. Hosts:
Dean & Lizzie Rasheed Accommodation / Meals: Stay in a private wing of the old homestead as the guests of Dean & Lizzie, and join them for meals in the dining room, or with a picnic out on the property. Activities: Learn about the activities of an outback station, including a visit to the old woolshed, which has been the focus of the station’s annual shearing since 1856. A bush walk in the Elder Range is a more interactive way of experiencing the nature in this part of Australia. A scenic flight (optional) over the rock ramparts of Wilpena Pound is the best way to appreciate this extraordinary geological formation. Take day trips to explore the gorges and valleys of the Flinders Ranges and a chance to spot some of the wildlife - Red Kangaroos, Emus, Wallaroos, Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies. Or enjoy a sundowner drink from on top of the Elder Range, as the sun disappears across the outback plains beyond. |
