The
home of the Ashton family, and the 8,000 acre sheep property on which it stands,
provide one of Australia’s finest heritage stays. When the Ashton brothers
first came to Markdale in 1920, they not only developed a fine pastoral country,
but also the birthplace of polo in Australia. In this they were so successful
that the Australian polo team that toured Britain in the 1930s arrived as
unknowns, all of them Ashton brothers, and returned to Australia having won
every game by significant margins! Whether you chose to stay in the greater
seclusion of the original 19 th century homestead (a short distance away) or in the main homestead,
waking up to the calls of cockatoos, rosella and kookaburras in the morning is a
uniquely Australian experience.

out on the property – the steep grassland hills are interspersed with tracts
of dense eucalypt, which are home to kangaroos, wallabies and many native birds.

lunch on the banks of the Lachlan River or local touring to the Abercrombie
& Wombeyan Caves can be arranged.
