Toumbaal Plains -
cover story
"On seeing this house for the first time, one is
reminded of a pioneer outpost on a vast coastal plain....a sanctuary for
protection from the forces both natural and psychological....it also
provides a relaxing space for cerebral relief from the demands of urban
pressures - a place where clients can recharge their energies and enjoy
the remoteness." |

"Sun shines on the
winners" Reporting on comments made by Architectural Awards
Jury
"Fergus Scott's
design "went beyond being a house, of course it functioned exquisitely
and it was beautiful looking but it took you into an area - its going to sound
bizarre - of dreams" "In a way it is not a building you
look at, it is more a building you look out from....You feel this is a
great place to relax and sit in the sun and enjoy your existence" |

Australian Financial Review, Property - Robert Harley. |
Article regarding the
Architectural Awards.
"The best, the joint Wilkinson Award Winner,
was a house that sits in the treeless grasslands on the Toumbaal Plains
south of Yamba.......The jury said the house was not so much a home but
an idea of a camping place....in essence the home is linked pavilions,
with punctuated walls that can be opened and closed depending on the
weather and the mind set of the inhabitants..." |

"It's plain to see"
- a double page centre spread featuring Toumbaal Plains House.
"As a whole, this is a house which seems to
explore a new tradition. Certainly it draws on the old, harking
back even further than traditional Australian homesteads to the
courtyard houses of early Rome. But is very much a contemporary
retreat - designed to prompt its inhabitants to see, feel and be a part
of the harsh but beautiful grass plain that encircles it......It is a
viewing platform: to the family of kangaroos that lives on the rise
beyond the house to the east and to the likes of the emus and brolgas
that live on the plain..." |
